Being of the literary minded, I immediately thought of Dante's intense and weird poetic masterpiece Inferno when encountering Kansas born Kris Kuskis's sold out sculptural cosmos, Beast Anthology, at Joshua Liner Gallery. Beasts, Saints, robotic hybrids, and Greek Gods are assembled together to form decadent hive-like dystopias bent on destruction and fevered with lust. Washed with a bleak apocalyptic color palate, the work shows no redemption, no saving grace among its industrial and architectural landscapes, freckled with the soft flesh of uncaring Gods and lost Saints.

Although the floors were taped off with invisible boundary lines, it's impossible not to be drawn in, impossible not to have to lean in closer for a better look at all the tiny yet epic scenes and figures that unfold in each contained vortex. As relatively small magnetic forces, the work carries quite a massive and alluring presence in the gallery. The track lighting was dimmed a bit lower than normal, casting eerie and intricate shadows in graduated gray tones against the walls, adding to the overall presence of the work .Created from a complex mix of found objects such as toys, religious statues, and hand-sculpted parts, the work is just as wondrous in its construction as it is in its final form. The seamless surgeries of the mixed anatomies further highlight Kuski's precise hand and vision. All the figures in the work are in a state of action, whether it is readying themselves for battle or sex, which adds an animate effect, as if each floating universe is truly alive. The contradiction of anthropomorphism and robotic hybrids with the bodies of armed men suggest prophecy, as each piece could serve as an omen to our current times, while still retaining the resonance and distance of science fiction.

The familiar characters from our youth are reassigned new identities, such as St. Anthony, the Patron saint of Lost things, is depicted as a cannibalistic, sleepy eyed giant, unaware or uncaring of the chaos at his feet. The beautiful three Graces from Greek Mythology are disgraced and tower above a nude entourage. Napoleon has become the monstrous one- eyed Cyclops and Fiver, the rabbit seer from Watership Down exists to see his doom prophecies realized. These choices further the unsettling feeling the work gives and affirms that there is indeed, no hope to those that enter here.

detail of 29 Pan Discomforting Persephone. Persephone was the doomed Queen of the Underworld, only allowed on earth for six months, during which time her presence is manifested by Spring and Summer. The other six months she is relegated to the underworld, the world undergoes fall and winter.

| INTERVIEW with Tristan Patterson
Director of the documentary film DRAGONSLAYER --> DRAGONSLAYER is a documentary about the skateboarder Josh "Skreech" Sandoval. He's a character and the film follows his many ups and downs dealing with young parenthood, competing, and relationships. However, rather then try and make some type of statement about him, it just presents him objectively in the way that he is through wonderful cinematography.

| Interview with Jeff Depner
Whether conceptually motivated or intuitively created, the process of painting has been a main attribute in art for sometime now. Controlling the surface of a canvas is at the root of most contemporary painting. Vancouver native Jeff Depner's work creates avenues for visual discovery through a process based aesthetic. Layers upon layers of paint each relating to the next. Masking some, if not all, of the past creates a visual history within. The work ebbs and flows between graphic qualities and thick painterly styles with muted but contemporary feeling colors. The constant process of 'improvised moves' allows some of the work to be based in grid like structures. It allows some of the smaller paintings a chance for inquiry in constructive qualities and aspects of painting, inserting his work into the long history of painting.

Marc Jacobs vs. The Graffiti Artist, Round 2: When Jacobs Turns Vandalized Store Into $680 Shirt <-- Earlier this week, on the night of the Met Ball, the Marc Jacobs boutique in SoHo was hit by French graffiti artist Kidult, who has famously vandalized Supreme, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton, among others. CCA MFA Show Tonight, Thurs

One of the best art events worth checking out in San Francisco every year is the CCA MFA Exhibition which opens tonight Thursday, May 10 (6–10pm) at the San Francisco campus (1111 8th St). The show runs through May 19th and is open 10 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., daily.
Nearly 50 MFA students participating in the show, exhibiting work from a fascinating range of formats and subjects, with works addressing the space race, fame, identity, commodity culture, the masculine theater of television wrestling, and genre cinema.

SF Crazy Rents

If you're an artist, you're better off moving to Manhattan as San Francisco rental prices have exceded that of the Big Apple as the Googlers, Facebookers, Twitters, and other well paid techies push everyone else out as they clammer for apartments close to the their shuttle buses which carry them up and down the peninsula... We've noticed a lot of artists moving to Oakland or down south to Los Angeles these days. Are you in a good rent controlled spot? As an artist or art fan, what effects does this have on our art scene?

San Francisco rents rose 15.8 percent in the first quarter of this year compared with the same time last year, to an average of $2,663 for all size units, according to RealFacts. Studio apartments average $2,075, up 16.5 percent in a year. The steepest rise came in one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments, which are now $2,611 - up 19.9 percent in the past year and up 30 percent from just two years ago. -read on.
