Fecal Face Dot Gallery is pleased to host Albert Reyes, Matt Furie, and Aiyana Udesen for their second showing as the art gang, Future Colors of America (show details here). Their display of drawing art gang-a-tude occured last year at Giant Robot where the trio covered the walls in numerous collaborative drawings on paper and Albert Reyes iconic book covers. In order to get a taste of what the duo are about we thought we asked Aiyana Udesen and Matt Furie what make them tick.
What does Future Colors of America mean to you?
Aiyana Udesen: FCA is three kids that draw for a living and don't have bosses. We make sure that none of us is slacking off.
Albert lives in LA with Matt and Aiyana up here in San Francisco. How do you three manage the collaborations? Is there a lot of mailing of work up and down the California coast?
Aiyana Udesen: A package of unfinished art ends up on our doorstep. We decide how to screw it up and then send it back.
Last September there was a Future Colors of America show at Giant Robot. Have there been shows with this title or will the show at Fecal Face be the second?
Aiyana Udesen: They always have the same name. Future Colors of America.
Do you get to draw together often?
Aiyana Udesen: Every few months we get together for some sessions. Matt and I have the pleasure of drawing together every day.
Are these works pure free flowing collaborations or is there a theme that separates them for each of your own personal works?
Aiyana Udesen: I really have to crank up the horror factor for Future Colors. I also throw in some little girl aspects with the kittens and stickers.
It keeps these guys on their toes.
Matt and Aiyana live together. Do you two look over each others shoulders when the other is working on another's piece?...
Aiyana Udesen: I usually tell Matt what to do step by step.
How did the idea of working together come about?
Aiyana Udesen: We like to draw something that will mess with each other's heads. One day we were all wearing neon shirts at a grocery store. Albert was busy licking the samples and Matt was pushing me in a shopping cart. We figured that we must have formed an art gang naturally and Albert yelled out: We're the Future Colors of America!
Matt Furie: it was a rainy day and we couldn't go out and play so we decided do stay inside and do some prison sex drawings.
Pick another an artist in the show and describe what you think they were like in high school.
Aiyana Udesen: I'm pretty sure Albert and Matt wer in Special Ed.
Matt Furie: aiyana probably listened to duran duran all the time and liked to make collage art out of stuff she cut out of magazines. and she was a prude that didnt give the guys the time of day.
Some artists and/ or musicians you're really excited about right now.
Aiyana Udesen: I'm really looking forward to the next Duran Duran album. I just saw A-ha's farewell tour recently. I'm not really into the stuff kids are listening to today.

Is Albert still hosting his halloween parties in his backyard?
Aiyana Udesen: Halloween is a special night for him. No one can take it away.
Matt Furie: yeah- last year was the best because he built a watchtower in the haunted house.

What are words of advice to up and coming san francisco based artists / illustrators?
Aiyana Udesen: My advice besides working on your art, is to work on your personality and not act like an asshole, so that people want to work with you.
Matt Furie: try to develop a style that you can work on in the park when its sunny.
Do you like spam?
Aiyana Udesen: I like it as much as I like any other processed flesh from a store.
Matt Furie: if i had to choose between spam and porn i would choose sega genesis.
Name 5 of your favorite artists of all time.
Aiyana Udesen: Favorite art:
Drew Struzan's awesome movie poster art, Andy Warhol's celebrity portraits, Tim Burton's movies, Eva Zeisel's ceramics, Juliana's costume jewelry.
How much gum do you chew?
Aiyana Udesen: Eww! There's too much gum on the sidewalks as it is.
Matt Furie: no gum.
And last but not least, what's your favorite youtube video as of recently?
Aiyana Udesen: I like that literal A-ha "take on me" video. I was the 10 millionth person to see it.

Future Colors of America Albert Reyes, Matt Furie, and Aiyana Udesen
A collaborative exhibition showcasing new work from artists and friends Albert Reyes, Matt Furie, and Aiyana Udesen.
Albert Reyes is a Los Angeles-based San Francisco Art Institute graduate who has developed a style equally influenced by graffiti, comics, and fine art. Among other media, he draws and prints on the inside covers of old books and mixes traditional Mexican imagery, popular culture icons, and political suggestion. He was the cover artist and main interview in Giant Robot 52.
Matt Furie is an Ohio-born, San Francisco-based artist whose richly detailed and hyper colored illustrations and paintings reflect the creative cross breeding of The Neverending Story, unrestrained imagination of The Muppet Show, and humor of ALF. His corruption by popular culture is further complicated--or perhaps enriched--by the energy of BMX culture and anarchy of street art.
Aiyana Udesen was born in Hawaii, went to school at the San Francisco Art Institute with Reyes, and lives in San Francisco, where she gained attention for her "how-to-draw" series of zines, many of which have married her interests in celebrities, animals, and realistic-yet-stylish illustration. Her fine art in both colored pencil and paints share a minimal palate that doesn't distract from the linework yet channels the flair of the '80s without the excess.
The Further Collective: Mario Martinez (Mars-1), Damon Soule & Oliver Vernon were in Flagstaff last week collaborating on an outdoor mural at The Flagstaff Brewing Company located in the historical district of downtown Flagstaff, AZ.
Director of the documentary film DRAGONSLAYER --> DRAGONSLAYER is a documentary about the skateboarder Josh "Skreech" Sandoval. He's a character and the film follows his many ups and downs dealing with young parenthood, competing, and relationships. However, rather then try and make some type of statement about him, it just presents him objectively in the way that he is through wonderful cinematography.
Got two new zines from Mildred and Pacolli for us to share with you. Pacolli's The Last Chance Kids is published through Volcom's Artist Series and is 40 pages and sells for only $7 printed on thick quality heavy stock.
Logan Crable emailed us the other day with an offer to view his Blow Job series. Normally we don't get offers to view someone's porn project, but we quickly learned that the blowing is more in the literal sense as opposed to the pleasuring form.
Thanks to Michelle Ramin for emailing us some her recent paintings. Michelle will be displaying her work as part of SFAI's MFA graduate show running this weekend and opening Friday, May 11th at the Pheonix Hotel here in San Francisco.
Whether conceptually motivated or intuitively created, the process of painting has been a main attribute in art for sometime now. Controlling the surface of a canvas is at the root of most contemporary painting. Vancouver native Jeff Depner's work creates avenues for visual discovery through a process based aesthetic. Layers upon layers of paint each relating to the next. Masking some, if not all, of the past creates a visual history within. The work ebbs and flows between graphic qualities and thick painterly styles with muted but contemporary feeling colors. The constant process of 'improvised moves' allows some of the work to be based in grid like structures. It allows some of the smaller paintings a chance for inquiry in constructive qualities and aspects of painting, inserting his work into the long history of painting.
On the way home from Fecal Face a couple Fridays back we swung through Fifty24SF to catch the two day show with the LA based hip-hop photographer Michael Miller in celebration of his new book. West coast hip-hop iconic early 1990's hip-hop photographs, including numerous photos of 2pac, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Snoop Dogg, Warren G... the bonus: Eazy-E touting a skateboard and a gun?!

A couple weeks back Jeff Soto flew out to Richmond, VA for their street art festival to do some mural action. Artists included the likes of Hense, Richard Colman, Dalek, Hamilton Glass, and many more.

Marc Jacobs vs. The Graffiti Artist, Round 2: When Jacobs Turns Vandalized Store Into $680 Shirt <-- Earlier this week, on the night of the Met Ball, the Marc Jacobs boutique in SoHo was hit by French graffiti artist Kidult, who has famously vandalized Supreme, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton, among others. One of the best art events worth checking out in San Francisco every year is the CCA MFA Exhibition which opens tonight Thursday, May 10 (6–10pm) at the San Francisco campus (1111 8th St). The show runs through May 19th and is open 10 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., daily.
Nearly 50 MFA students participating in the show, exhibiting work from a fascinating range of formats and subjects, with works addressing the space race, fame, identity, commodity culture, the masculine theater of television wrestling, and genre cinema.

If you're an artist, you're better off moving to Manhattan as San Francisco rental prices have exceded that of the Big Apple as the Googlers, Facebookers, Twitters, and other well paid techies push everyone else out as they clammer for apartments close to the their shuttle buses which carry them up and down the peninsula... We've noticed a lot of artists moving to Oakland or down south to Los Angeles these days. Are you in a good rent controlled spot? As an artist or art fan, what effects does this have on our art scene?

San Francisco rents rose 15.8 percent in the first quarter of this year compared with the same time last year, to an average of $2,663 for all size units, according to RealFacts. Studio apartments average $2,075, up 16.5 percent in a year. The steepest rise came in one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments, which are now $2,611 - up 19.9 percent in the past year and up 30 percent from just two years ago. -read on.
