Let's talk about clowns. I am drawn to your work for a number of reasons, but the first thing I wonder is how you decide on your content and what is said content's signifigance to you?

I don't really know the answer to that. I know that I seem to be drawn to sad characters, the forlorn reject. Something about being on the outside. The outcast. But I also am intrigued by the super confident fool. He too is a reject. I'm not really interested in what's accepted by people. I like the things, places and characters that have been forsaken. On both sides of the field. The happy genius fool and the pathetic misfit. I guess I like drama.

I always think it's great when someone's body of work cohesively spans mutiple mediums. Do you have a favorite/ least favorite?

No. I love/ hate it all. I get really sick of stuff quickly. I'm pretty fickle and I have a short attention span. So I like to move on from something pretty soon after I start it. That's why it's good that I have all these things to do. Painting, animation, drawing, sculpture, pottery, dance, music, cooking.

The way you handle your materials is really interesting. To me there is always this perfect balance of yuck and beauty. How did you realize your technique?

I over-indulge. I really just make work and I don't really think about it. I like to see the material move and breath, and melt. I don't like things to stay static.

I see you went to school for animation. Did you start doiing that and then find painting? Why did you decide you want make art?

My mom, aunt, uncle, everyone in my small family is a painter, or an artist of some kind. So I was painting my whole life, out doing landscape paintings around the beach where I grew up when I was 14-ish. Thus, painting was kind of not what I wanted to do for a while when I went to school, that's why I went to film school. Also the life as a painter just seemed a little too serious for me, but I've managed to make it what I want it to be for myself, I think. I have a healthy balance going on right now, hopefully. Also, my dad's an architect, that's probably where the animation bug came from -- making little worlds that you create and be supreme leader in, except mine are mini and made from wood and clay. I have always been drawn to fantasy worlds, theatrical worlds, hand-made worlds. This world doesn't always hold my attention for very long. But I also love animators and comedians. That's probably another reason I was drawn to animation.

The first piece of yours I saw was the "Hobo Clown" film here in Chicago. I wasn't the only person in the room who was totally dazzled. There is this blurry line of narrative in this movie and in your 2-D work as well. wW see reoccuring characters like "green man" and these clowns and fauna. Is something specific happening or not happening? Is it telling a story or open to speculation?

I don't know if there's a story. It seems like there is. It's more of a non-narrative, but things definitely happen. There is a beginning, middle and end... to me.

What/who inspires your work?

So much... music, film. It's an endless list. Harryhausen, bruce bickford, klaus kinski, superjail, terry gilliam, eric yahnker, peter saul, andre butzer, armen eloyan, daniel richter, basil wolverton, crumb, balthus, ensor, van gogh, soutine, hockney, paul mccarthy, jan svankmajer, rankin bass, king kong, pina bausch, r. stevie moore, big business, upsilon acrux, lightning bolt, angel witch, venom, the earthmen, barbra streisand, the original production of a chorus line, slayer

I am a really bad story teller, I'd bore you.

How do you bide your time when your not dealing with the fabulous world of art?

I'm in a couple bands. The Singers is one. We're the best band in the world. Changing the face of music today. I eat cheeseburgers, drink whiskey, go dancing. Normal boring stuff. Painting and animation are both such solitary pursuits, I'm alone in a box with my own thoughts and creatures every every day, almost every hour. So I try and see human beings as much as I can. I'm in a constant struggle because I'm a loner, at the same time a glutten for attention, so I attempt to achieve a balance...

Any notable endeavors in the near future for you?

I'm in some group shows at Alexander and Bonin, McClain Gallery, Palod-Haroudin, Mike Weiss Gallery, Haifa Museum, etc... As we speak I am in a little black box for the next month filming a music video for Grizzly Bear, and I have a solo exhibition of my work at Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles opening Jan. 9, 2010.

Further Collective Flagstaff Mural

The Further Collective: Mario Martinez (Mars-1), Damon Soule & Oliver Vernon were in Flagstaff last week collaborating on an outdoor mural at The Flagstaff Brewing Company located in the historical district of downtown Flagstaff, AZ.


INTERVIEW with Tristan Patterson

Director of the documentary film DRAGONSLAYER --> DRAGONSLAYER is a documentary about the skateboarder Josh "Skreech" Sandoval. He's a character and the film follows his many ups and downs dealing with young parenthood, competing, and relationships. However, rather then try and make some type of statement about him, it just presents him objectively in the way that he is through wonderful cinematography.


2 New Zines by Pacolli & Mildred

Got two new zines from Mildred and Pacolli for us to share with you. Pacolli's The Last Chance Kids is published through Volcom's Artist Series and is 40 pages and sells for only $7 printed on thick quality heavy stock.


Logan Crable's Blow Jobs

Logan Crable emailed us the other day with an offer to view his Blow Job series. Normally we don't get offers to view someone's porn project, but we quickly learned that the blowing is more in the literal sense as opposed to the pleasuring form.

Interview with Jeff Depner

Whether conceptually motivated or intuitively created, the process of painting has been a main attribute in art for sometime now. Controlling the surface of a canvas is at the root of most contemporary painting. Vancouver native Jeff Depner's work creates avenues for visual discovery through a process based aesthetic. Layers upon layers of paint each relating to the next. Masking some, if not all, of the past creates a visual history within. The work ebbs and flows between graphic qualities and thick painterly styles with muted but contemporary feeling colors. The constant process of 'improvised moves' allows some of the work to be based in grid like structures. It allows some of the smaller paintings a chance for inquiry in constructive qualities and aspects of painting, inserting his work into the long history of painting.

Michael Miller @Fifty24SF

On the way home from Fecal Face a couple Fridays back we swung through Fifty24SF to catch the two day show with the LA based hip-hop photographer Michael Miller in celebration of his new book. West coast hip-hop iconic early 1990's hip-hop photographs, including numerous photos of 2pac, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Snoop Dogg, Warren G... the bonus: Eazy-E touting a skateboard and a gun?!

Marc Jacobs vs. The Graffiti Artist, Round 2: When Jacobs Turns Vandalized Store Into $680 Shirt <-- Earlier this week, on the night of the Met Ball, the Marc Jacobs boutique in SoHo was hit by French graffiti artist Kidult, who has famously vandalized Supreme, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton, among others. CCA MFA Show Tonight, Thurs

One of the best art events worth checking out in San Francisco every year is the CCA MFA Exhibition which opens tonight Thursday, May 10 (6–10pm) at the San Francisco campus (1111 8th St). The show runs through May 19th and is open 10 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., daily.

Nearly 50 MFA students participating in the show, exhibiting work from a fascinating range of formats and subjects, with works addressing the space race, fame, identity, commodity culture, the masculine theater of television wrestling, and genre cinema.

SF Crazy Rents

If you're an artist, you're better off moving to Manhattan as San Francisco rental prices have exceded that of the Big Apple as the Googlers, Facebookers, Twitters, and other well paid techies push everyone else out as they clammer for apartments close to the their shuttle buses which carry them up and down the peninsula... We've noticed a lot of artists moving to Oakland or down south to Los Angeles these days. Are you in a good rent controlled spot? As an artist or art fan, what effects does this have on our art scene?

San Francisco rents rose 15.8 percent in the first quarter of this year compared with the same time last year, to an average of $2,663 for all size units, according to RealFacts. Studio apartments average $2,075, up 16.5 percent in a year. The steepest rise came in one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments, which are now $2,611 - up 19.9 percent in the past year and up 30 percent from just two years ago. -read on.
